A day with the Blind

” And his disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?”
Jesus answered, “It was not that this man sinned, or his parents, but that the works of God might be displayed in him. We must work the works of him who sent me while it is day; night is coming, when no one can work. As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” Having said these things, he spat on the ground and made mud with the saliva. Then he anointed the man’s eyes with the mud … “

John 9:2-7

On the Sunday of Three Kings, we were lucky to have spent the day with the blind people. There was a home of the blind located at Mansilingan, Bacolod City.

Upon arriving at the place, we were shocked to know that they were housing 30 blind persons together with their dependents. Seeing the list of names, there were a total of 109 dependents.

These blind people were housed in an individual shelter with their families. They have a hall, where they come to gather during special meetings and held special events. They also have a school to which the children goes to.

The community of the blind is like a small village. Good thing, the government supports them with monthly allowance of Php 12,500. However, this is to be divided among the 30 families. And obviously this cannot sustain their daily needs. So some of them still continue to go out on the streets to beg.

I was lucky to have a family who helped me out with this outreach for the blind persons. Sponsored by my cousin Valerie Solidum, we were able to have some groceries for these families and were able to give them food as snacks during that time. They were also so happy receiving toys by which some of them was so grateful to have. It was really a nice feeling to see that these unfortunate brothers and sisters of ours are somewhat happy with what the blessings they received even in a little way.

Here at Mansilingan, the blind badly needs support from us to provide them with their daily needs most especially clothing and food. They may not be able to repay us but through God’s ways, we will be repay a thousand folds more.
