Masskara Making Contest 2009
Masskara Making Contest ABS-CBN channel 2 started a mask making contest years back for the masskara festival of bacolod. This has been a success. It has invited artists from different places around the Philippines to express their imagination.
For this year’s competition, the entries were submitted last October 2. Now they are displayed for the public at Robinson’s place-Bacolod at the Masskara Village.
It’s nice to know that they have made use of several materials that you never may have thought of. Masks made of broom, coconut husks, used electric fan, there was even a mask where photos are put into a mosaic, masks out of sequences, glitters, beads, seeds, leaves, shells and even recycled materials. It’s amazing to know they can create such a unique masterpiece out of old and used materials.
Here are my top three choices that really caught my attention and had me come up with my own interpretation.
Entry 31:

It is a mask that has a theme on it. When you look at the mask, you are reminded of how a bacolodnon would live their lives. The church symbolizes how they put God first. The farmer and the lady carrying a small basket on top of her head simply shows how hardworking they are. The family resembles that it is important to be whole. The face of the child, which is the masskara itself, shows that all smiles and contentment is present especially if all aspects of his life is complete: God, Family and work(lifestyle).
Entry 28:

The pearl of smiles – A transition through the years.
This entry is made of small beads of pearls. It isĀ made of mostly small rope materials with the colors blue, yellow and white. The masks is so attractive that it shows the uniqueness of the materials being assembled together. In addition, the use of feathers on the upper part of the head made the mask even more attractive to look at.
Entry 12:

A mask so simple yet so elegant. When you look at it, you are reminded of how simple a thing is, if put together, will come up into something beautiful. Like on this mask, the white leaves are accented with glitters of gold and white, put together on a silver glittered smiling faced masks. The final product simply shows the uniqueness of how you are to appreciate beauty. It’s so dainty to look at and now overly designed but so beautiful.
Thanks to our friend, AJ Canillas for the great pictures he got through his lenses.
