Kabankalan City

Located at the Southern part of Negros Occidental was considered a first class city. Because of its development and on going progress the city is now one of the top listed cities in Negros.

In the early years, it was once a barrio of Ilog, a nearby town of the city today.  But on March 14, 1907, due to the passing of the Act 1612 by the Philippine Commissions, it was separated and became a Municipality. When Kabankalan turned into a town, the first President Municipal was Lorenzo Zayco.

In the mid-1907, “pulahan”, a rebel group, led by Papa Isio raided the town and burned all the houses. However, despite of the conflict, the people of Kabankalan rebuilt the town from destruction. Two sugar mills was established in 1960’s and early 70’s give the town a boost into the list of top improving towns of Negros. In time, school, banks, hospitals and churches were also established. The first Bishop of Kabankalan, Bishop Vicente Navarra was installed on February 11, 1988.

It was converted into a city on August 2, 1997 by former president Fidel V. Ramos with the ratification of Republic Act No. 8297 or the City Charter of Kabankalan.

Nowadays you will see Kabankalan being regularly busy in their day to day activities. They love to be with their families and mostly go out with friends. They go to Internet Cafés and chat with their loved ones or let pass the time by playing online games. If they get bored they would go strolling at Gaisano City mall or even do their groceries at Libra Mart and Lopue’s Department Store.

At present, the Kabankalan Airport is undergoing construction. They believed that this would be a bridge for tourists to get to know their city. New buildings, inns and restaurants continue to rise as the demand of the population goes higher.

In Kabankalan, the main means of transportation is by riding a tricycle. And for them to travel to other nearby towns, they would ride on a fast jeepney or be on a public vehicle. Kabankalan is an hour drive south from Bacolod City by private car while on a public utility vehicle, takes you about two hours. The city is also the take-off point for various destinations down south and links the province to Dumaguete City via the Kabankalan-Mabinay Highway.

Kabankalan City has many places to go to. If one has to visit Kabankalan, they can go on a tour of the city and if you want to be a part of the festivities, join their sinulog festivals every month of January.
